  • Paula Metcalf    http://www.paulametcalf.co.uk/index.html

is a hugely talented illustrator with a growing reputation. She made up her mind to be an author and illustrator at the tender age of sixteen and later graduated from Anglia Polytechnic University with a First Class Honours degree in illustration and an MA in children’s illustration. Her graceful, beautifully lit artwork is influenced by dance and her love of Eastern European fairy tales.

Paula is currently the Illustrator-in-Residence at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire.

I enjoy creating pieces which capture atmospheric light changes and the beautiful textures that can be seen within the natural world.  work is not always truly representational, and sometimes I feel that it is more interesting to capture a particular mood as a splash of water or pool of colour. I spent several of my early school years in Japan and I have now become fond of the simplicity of line and composition found within their traditional works of art, and I feel that this past influence can be seen within my work now. Having later studied Illustration in Cornwall I found myself also being inspired by the tranquillity of the local landscape and the unique light that can be seen within this region.
